Taking Action Gets Results! MAOF Reviews Staffing Policy in Response to Members' Protest

Thanks to the efforts of SEIU Local 99 members at five MAOF sites, management is reviewing its “policy” that requires Teachers and Teaching Assistants to look for their own substitutes, and act as substitutes, when staff is out.

Last month, when teachers were overwhelmed because of lack of coverage, they’d had enough. Teachers called their Area Supervisor and insisted that substitutes be sent to their centers. They let management know that putting the burden of staffing on teachers not only violates current policies, it also impacts the children because it interrupts stability and continuity in the classroom. Management got the message and they immediately scheduled a meeting to address this problem.
