LAUSD Members Receive Layoff Notices
District is offering Outlplacement Services
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) sent out another round of layoff notices mid-December. We understand this loss of jobs is particularly difficult during this economic downturn and we want to assure members that SEIU Local 99 is here to help. Our Member Resource Center is available to answer your questions at 213-637-0296.
The District is offering Outplacement Services and job-search seminars in January and February.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions...
Weren’t furlough days supposed to prevent layoffs?
The furlough day agreement recently approved by members in Units B &C prevents any additional layoffs for the 2009-10 school year beyond those that were already approved in LAUSD’s budget. That means that after this latest round of layoffs, SEIU Local 99 members will not see any more loss of jobs this school year thanks to the sacrifice of members willing to take days off without pay.
When will layoffs take effect?
The layoffs announced in December will take effect in February, 2010.
The District has talked about a 12% cut in pay. Will there be a pay cut?
NO. According to our contract, any changes to our wages must first be negotiated with SEIU Local 99 and voted on by our members. Our union has not agreed to any pay cut.
Press reports have said that LAUSD is planning for more budget cuts. Can we expect more layoffs ?
The School District faces a $470 million budget deficit in 2010-11 and another $700 million budget gap in 2011-12.
On December 8, 2009, the School Board approved a revised budget that has four possible courses of action, one of which includes layoffs. The other plans include furloughs, pay cuts and a parcel tax. However, all of this is preliminary and the District will need to discuss these options with our union and provide us with more information. No final decisions have been made regarding layoffs or other cost saving measures for next school year or beyond.
What can Local 99 members do now to protect jobs in the future?
In addition to working to make sure our state budget funds education, another key action you can take is becoming more involved in your School Site Council. Under the District’s new budgeting process, schools are making many decisions about what jobs to save. Join the Council, attend meetings, or run for office on the Council. If you are a parent with children in the school, run for the parent representative positions. The Council makes decisions that impact our futures. Let’s make sure our voices are heard! Contact your Steward or Principal.
