LAUSD School Board Makes Decision on Operators for 30 Schools
What Does the LAUSD Public School Choice Vote Mean To You?
On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, the LAUSD School Board voted to turn over the operation of 12 existing schools and 18 new schools to various operators, most of which are LAUSD operators. The good news for Local 99 members is that most of these operators will honor our union contract or “contract with LAUSD” for the services we provide.
The School Board’s vote is the first step in implementing the Public School Choice Resolution which calls for changes to improve our schools. Many of us are parents or guardians of children at LAUSD schools and we believe that our schools must improve for the sake our kids. But we also know that our families need good union jobs to get ahead.
In the coming weeks, SEIU Local 99 will be approaching the new operators to ensure that job protections and respect for workers are a part of their plan.
One important area that we will be addressing is job standards. When the Public School Choice Resolution was passed last fall, it stated that operators must use LAUSD as the default provider for services such as cafeteria, custodian, maintenance, security, supplies and transportation. In other words, Unit C workers would still be employed by LAUSD. However, the agreement also states that operators may contract with non-LAUSD providers if we fail to meet their standards. The resolution has no language protecting the jobs of Unit B, G, or F employees. These concerns will be a top issue of discussion between our union and the school operators.
We will continue to keep you updated as this process moves forward. Below is a listing of the schools and where the operators stand on honoring our contract and protecting good jobs.
