Members Approve Four Furlough Days at LAUSD
MEMBERS IN UNITS B & C VOTE TO TAKE 4 FURLOUGHS TO SAVE JOBS
In order to help address the District's budget deficit without massive layoffs to Local 99 members' jobs or additional disruption to student services, more than 90% of voting members in LAUSD Units B & C voted to accept four furlough days in the 2011-12 school year.
Thank you to all the Local 99 members who voted. Your sacrifice will mean a total of 1615 Local 99 members' jobs will be saved.
We were able to reduce the number of furloughs because of increased state revenue. The reduced furloughs are also due in great part to Local 99 members' efforts, including electing Governor Brown who kept his commitment to fund education. In his "May Revise" budget proposal, the Governor proposed that $3 billion of the state's $6.6 billion revenue increase go back to our schools. LAUSD stands to receive about $183 million back from the state. However, the District still faces a $225 million budget gap as a result of the massive budget cuts of the past three years. There is still hope to close the gap even further if the state legislature votes to maintain existing tax revenues. SEIU Local 99 is pushing hard to make sure our legislators pass a budget that will fund our schools.
