Torrance Food Service Workers Tell District to Follow Contract
The District seemed to be in a hurry to make staffing changes in the Food Service Department and apparently overlooked our contract and Personnel Commission rules about filling vacant positions. On June 16 the School Board approved hiring college students as 1 ½ hour staff. This violates our contract which clearly states that the District must negotiate job subcontracting and hours with Local 99. Furthermore, this move by the District raises questions about safety for staff and students.
While providing job opportunities for college students is a good idea, hiring untrained, untested workers to handle food is not—especially with the health and safety of hundreds of students on the line. We took these concerns to the Personnel Commission and it agreed with us. The PC did not approve the creation of the new positions. We have requested more information from the District about the new 1 ½ hour positions but have received no reply. We’ll continue to push forward until we get answers.
Special thanks to Maria Bautista, a Local 99 Steward in the Food Service Department for being active and keeping her coworkers informed.
