Local 99’s Newest Members Are in Lynwood!
Campus Monitors Join SEIU Local 99
Nearly 100 Lynwood Unified Campus Monitors joined SEIU Local 99 after a hard fought battle to secure their right to unionize. In January of this year, Campus Monitors presented the District with union cards demonstrating that a majority of them wanted to form a union with Local 99.
However, in May, the District denied their right to unionize. Workers took action—speaking out at Board meetings, wearing their purple SEIU T-shirts, and holding School Board members accountable. Finally, in June, the Board voted to recognize Campus Monitors as part of Local 99. “Campus Monitors were the only workers in LUSD who did not have a just process to be able to make improvements at work,” said new member Teresa Alcala. “Because of that, we urged the members of the board to recognize our union.” Workers’ next step is to go to the bargaining table where they will negotiate issues specific to their classification including schedules and seniority.
