MEDIA ADVISORY — Students and School Workers Protest “Back-to-School Lockout” on SEPT 8
Thursday, August 19, 2010
Rally and press conference led by students, parents, classroom aides, custodians, and others condemning Sacramento’s reckless disinvestment of our schools.
Due to Sacramento’s $17+ billion in cuts to education, the Los Angeles Unified School District is closing its schools for seven regularly-scheduled days during the 2010-2011 school year (plus an additional floating furlough day). The reduced school year means less classroom time for students and unpaid furlough days for school employees.
As California legislators continue to try to balance the state’s budget, school workers will urge Sacramento to reinvest in and improve our schools. There are alternatives to an all-cuts budget, such as ending the tax breaks and giveaways to Big Oil and other giant corporations.
“Locked Out” students and school staff, including custodians, teaching assistants, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and others; LAUSD School Board President Monica Garcia.
