On Thursday, January 3 we met with LAUSD to bargain over the impact that a teacher’s strike will have on SEIU Local 99 members and the schools where we work. A strike by the teachers is scheduled to start on January 10. We presented the district with many of our questions and concerns in an effort to learn the District’s plans around how schools will operate safely during UTLA’s strike. We also used this opportunity to remind the District that Local 99 members will not be doing the work of striking teachers and credentialed staff out on strike. SEIU Local 99 stands in full support and solidarity with our brothers and sisters at UTLA.
We asked questions such as what should a classified worker do if asked by an administrator or principal to supervise children? What if a delivery truck could not safely enter a school site? Or, what do we do if an entrance is inaccessible and we cannot safely leave the children on our route at school? Many of questions were not answered but we expect to hear back from the District early next week.
We also insisted that the District provide us with protocols for reporting and documenting if a classified staff is asked to do the work of credentialed staff at individual school sites as well as any unsafe conditions. We expect to hear from the District soon on what systems and protocols they plan to implement during the strike to keep our students, families, and coworkers safe on the job. There will be an SEIU Local 99 FAQ available to us by early next week in which there will be answers to most of our questions.
We all have many concerns about the strike happening next week but, as always, our best defense is our union strength. We must know our job duties and enforce our rights on the job. We need to have each other’s backs. We all should wear purple and stickers in solidarity of the teachers while they are striking.
During the strike everyone should report any improper practices or violations, should they occur, to your steward or SEIU Local 99’s Membership Resource Center at (213) 387-8393, ext. 300 or by submitting an Online Inquiry Form. Please see our previous post detailing some frequently asked questions and your rights in the event of a strike. We will update these questions as we continue bargaining with the District over our concerns.
We all should attend our upcoming informational sessions to voice any additional concerns we may have. For the most up to date information please continue to check our website.
