Our union health care benefits contract allows for eligible district employees to receive $3000 per year if they choose not to participate in LAUSD health care benefits plans and have health coverage through their spouse/domestic partner’s employer, Medicare, Medicaid, or other source.

To receive the cash-out payment, you must decline benefits in writing by submitting a Medical Opt-Out Cash Back Attestation Form during the open enrollment period in the fall of each year. The form is available on LAUSD’s website here.

The $3000 payment is paid in $250 installments through your regular payroll checks. It is considered taxable income.  If you and your spouse/domestic partner both work for LAUSD, one may elect the medical opt-out/cash-back option and be covered as a dependent under the other’s medical election.

Opting out of LAUSD medical coverage is not permanent.  You may choose to enroll in a medical plan during the annual open enrollment period or because of a qualifying event. Dental and vision coverage are not affected by this option and may still be elected.
