Parents, students, union and community members are sharing their overwhelming support for Hilda as they urge The Accelerated School to reinstate such a valuable member of the TAS community. In just a few days, hundreds signed-on to the petition to #BringBackHilda. And, on August 29, dozens of South LA community members, TAS parents and alumni came together to demand that the Board of Trustees return Hilda to her position as Health Services Coordinator. Over ten community members spoke powerfully and directly to the Board about how Hilda has touched their lives and urged the board to reconsider its abrupt termination of Hilda.
“Hilda is a pillar of our community – especially advocating for our children with Special Needs,” said Silva Venegas, President of the Alliances of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) Education Chapter.
“Hilda has shown she’s a qualified employee with experience – that’s what children in our community need. She is an assest to our community,” said Anitta Nicklen South LA Resident.
It was clear from their reaction to countless testimonials the board was disinterested and unbothered by the community’s pleas. They continued to conduct their meeting with no comment. That’s why we’re gearing-up to show-up in greater force at the next TAS Board of Trustees meeting. Save the date: September 26. More details will be coming soon.
A long-standing South LA resident, Hilda served TAS for over 12 years and brought decades of experience to her role as a former Esperanza Community Health Promotora, LAUSD health care advocate, and USC Head Start Health Services Coordinator. Hilda was also a TAS founding parent and an SEIU Local 99 Steward who helped food service workers, custodians, and other classified staff win a monumental contract improving wages for everyone. Hilda was unfairly terminated via email on July 11, 2019 in what we believe is retaliation for her advocacy work on behalf of employees, parents, and students.
Join us at the next TAS Board Meeting scheduled for September 26. We will hold TAS accountable. We will not give up. RSVP with your name and phone number to Jorge Roman at [email protected]
