SEIU Local 99 members fought hard to win the Summer Bridge Fund (also called the Classified School Employee Summer Assistance Program). This program gives eligible classified school workers the opportunity to save money from their paychecks during the school year and receive up to a dollar-for-dollar match from the state during the summer break when work is not available.
Applications to participate in the program in the 2020-21 school year are now being accepted and must be returned to your employer by March 1, 2020 (March 2 for Santa Monica Malibu Unified and March 9 for Hacienda La Puente Unified). Please note that March 1 is a Sunday and district offices are closed. Additionally, even if you are participating in the program for the 2019-20 school year, you must reapply for 2020-21.
Your school district should have notified you of the application process and instructions for returning the completed form. Please note that LAUSD is only accepting online applications and Torrance Unified is only accepting applications in-person. At school districts that are accepting applications via U.S. Mail, it is recommended that you send your application via Registered Mail so that you have a record of it being sent and received. At school districts that are accepting applications in person, be sure to request a proof of submission in writing. And if you’re submitting online, be sure to save any emails from the district or take screen shots of confirmation of receipt.

What’s new for 2020-21?
SEIU Local 99 members won improvements to the program that will help more members qualify in 2020-21. Some of these changes include:
Members are eligible for the summer bridge program if you earn less than $62,400/year working for the school district and do not work the summer session.
If you work the summer session with the school district, you are not eligible for the summer bridge program even if you earn less than $62,400/year. This is because the Summer Bridge Fund was created as a safety net to help classified employees make it through the summer months when there is no work available. It is not meant to replace summer session work. While the decision to work during the summer session is up to each member, keep in mind that if you accept a summer assignment with the school district, you will earn more than if you contribute to the Summer Bridge Fund. However, you can work outside the school district during the summer and still be eligible even if the total income from your school district and non-school district jobs is more than $62,400/year.
If you work for a limited time for the school district during the months of June, July, and August as part of your regular school-year assignment (not summer session) you are still eligible to participate in the program.
You are eligible for the program if you work 11 months or less per school year.
You may opt-out of the program at any time during the school year if you are experiencing personal or financial hardship.
