“When the schools closed, everything changed.”
By Susana Muñoz, Building & Grounds Worker, Esteban Torres High School
Our job is to disinfect classrooms, doors, computers that are being released to students, everything in detail. The work is important and needs to be done. My own children are in school and, as a parent, I know that you feel safer if the schools are clean and the students have all the equipment they need.
When the schools closed, everything changed. At work we do have masks, gloves, disinfectant. We try to practice social distancing, but sometimes it’s difficult. Right now, we’re helping the principal with the computers that are being distributed to students for online learning. I clean the computers when they take them to school for repairs and I clean them before they are delivered to the students. The other day we had to clean 300 computers.
I feel good to be serving the students. They need to continue learning. To a certain extent, we try to comply, but I admit we do feel afraid. Right now, nobody is sure. I think about getting sick and getting my children sick. We were told that if anyone at school were to have the virus, we would all be in quarantine. There are many risks. I do worry a lot.
