The COVID-19 pandemic has confirmed what workers already know: America’s economy and democracy are out of balance, with too much power in the hands of corporations, billionaires, and self-serving politicians who have rigged the system against working families.

The crisis has laid bare the deep cracks and divides in our system with millions of Americans living paycheck to paycheck with no healthcare coverage, paid sick leave and other benefits. This pandemic did not create these problems: it revealed what has always existed.

While Congress has spent hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars bailing out big business and millionaire CEOs, the hardworking public servants who have been putting their lives on the line every day are being warned that looming budget shortfalls could mean massive cuts in jobs and services.

We are calling on Congress to pass the HEROES Act—a bill that:

  • Protects the health and safety of all workers, no matter their race, immigration status, or employment status;
  • Ensures job, wage, and economic security for all workers;
  • Invests in public services, not big corporations; and
  • Invests in an economy and democracy that works for all of us.

A pullback in public investment at the state and local levels will accelerate the economy’s downward spiral, resulting in more job losses, a longer and slower recovery, and long-term damage to our future. We can’t allow that to happen.
