In these times of uncertainty, our children need stability and support more than ever. Working parents, who must provide for their families, need the assurance of safe and reliable child care. And as we plan for recovery, we need to strengthen the places our communities rely on for help and support. Yet, in the midst of this pandemic, the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District has moved to shut down its child development centers.
The school district’s decision will disrupt the lives of hundreds of families and children and displace dozens of dedicated education workers who have provided quality care and early learning to our community for decades. This drastic decision will make recovery even more difficult. Instead of planning for a safe re-opening, Santa Monica Malibu Unified is shutting its doors on our children and communities.
I urge you to stop the shut down of our Child Development Centers. Keep our children safe and learning and help families recover from this pandemic.
