Although we are battling this employer over layoffs of Child Development Services (CDS) and other classified staff, we’ve also had some initial discussions about the role of the remaining classified staff in distance learning and the eventual reopening of schools. At the Board of Education meeting on July 21, several SMMUSD Board members emphasized the need to use paraprofessionals and other classified staff to support distance learning, as well as assigning other classified staff (including CDS) to handle supervision at school sites even when there is no on-site instruction happening. We’ve requested that negotiations over the layoffs move to the Fact Finding stage so we can further present our case. We are also scheduling an additional meeting to discuss the district’s reopening plans.
