Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a statewide requirement that all K-12 school workers be either vaccinated or take weekly COVID tests. This takes effect August 12, 2021 and all school districts need to be in compliance by October 15, 2021.

Safety is a top priority as members prepare to go back to school and we share in Governor Gavin Newsom’s commitment to increasing the rate of vaccination so we can better protect students, staff, our families and communities.

The new statewide order follows many of the agreements we have already reached with employers for the safe reopening of school for in-person instruction. Just as we have done throughout the pandemic, we will continue to negotiate with school districts and other employers over the impact of any new protocols or policies, including this latest order. As the new requirement is implemented, we must ensure that all workers have paid time off and access to free vaccination and testing and that concerns are addressed.

As union members, we know that workers and employers sitting down at the bargaining table is the most effective way to create and implement vaccine policies for the benefit of the entire school community.
