Los Angeles – Three days ago 30,000 LAUSD school workers went on strike for unfair labor practices, signs of the school district’s deep disrespect for school workers and disregard for the vital role of custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, special education assistants and other workers crucial to our school communities. Today, the three day strike concludes and the members of SEIU Local 99 and UTLA will return to work on Friday.
Thresa Thomas, Food Service Worker, said:
“This strike is a huge step forward for every school worker in LAUSD, for our students, our parents and our community. By standing together on the picket lines, before the sun was up and through the wind and rain, we showed the district we are not afraid; we are stronger than ever. We won the respect we’ve been demanding and it feels like the whole world is finally listening. Together, with members of UTLA, our picket lines were 65,000 strong.
“Tomorrow we will be back at work in cafeterias and classrooms knowing we are not only in a stronger position to bargain for wages and staffing, we now have a stronger voice to fight for our students.”
