Bargaining for SEIU Local 99 Members at Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is Gearing Up!

Members of our SEIU Local 99 bargaining team at LACCD met September 26, 2023 to review the results of the bargaining survey.  Hundreds of members participated in the survey providing invaluable information to help guide our bargaining team as they prioritize proposals for our next contract.

The survey numbers made it clear how much members are struggling on LACCD’s low wages and understaffing – and why we need to gear-up to take action in our contract fight!

    • 57% of SEIU Local 99 members at LACCD have to work outside jobs to make ends meet.
  • 62% of members have experienced food insecurity
  • 45% reported being homeless or on the verge of losing housing while working at LACCD

The survey also showed how substandard wages are leading to serious staffing shortages that are impacting workers and student services.

  • 83% feel overwhelmed and pressured with increasing workloads
  • 59% agree that the colleges are not being cleaned to the safest standards due to understaffing

Enough is Enough! During the pandemic SEIU Local 99 members were called essential, but LACCD is refusing to recognize that with fair and equitable wages.

It’s clear for members that LACCD MUST improve wages, working conditions, and benefits for members to feel recognized for the hard work they are doing. Your SEIU Local 99 bargaining team members went over the results and gained necessary perspective in preparation of a proposal to present to district representatives.

In addition to reviewing the survey results, our bargaining team also compared wages paid at other community college districts to determine a fair and equitable rate. The cost of living continues to increase and we should be able to live and raise our families in the cities where we work!

As we gear up for our contract fight, you can take the lead by becoming a member of the Contract Negotiations Team and/or participating in one of the Labor Management Committees to enforce our contract. Look for more information about the nomination and election process  HERE.
