Members Pack the LAUSD Board Room to Demand the School District Stop the Cuts!

SEIU Local 99 members packed the LAUSD school board meeting on June 4, 2024 to deliver a powerful message directly to Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Board President Jackie Goldberg, and the entire school board: No to Cuts!  We were joined by members of United Teachers Los Angeles, including UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz. The school board is currently working on a budget for next school year that includes cuts to hours and positions of Campus Aides, Supervision Aides, Teachers, Counselors, Community Representatives, Teacher Assistants, and others. These cuts to vital student services will hurt students and workers. And, they are unlawful as the district never negotiated over these reductions with our union and intimidated many workers into self-reducing their hours. If your hours were reduced this school year or next, add your name to the class action charges here.

At the school board meeting, member Jennifer Torres, a Special Education Assistant, spoke out about the district’s disrespect for classified employees. “We are not just bodies in the classroom, you can not easily replace the support we bring to the students everyday,” Jennifer told the board. “By cutting and eliminating critical positions and programs, our students will be greatly affected and will pay the price if these cuts go through.”

Member Debbie Skaife, a Campus Aide, spoke powerfully about her dedication to students. Yet, despite her 13 years with the district, her work assignment is still only 3 hours and 45 minutes, making her ineligible for health care benefits.  “If I worked just 15 minutes more at LAUSD, I would qualify for health insurance. Just 15 minutes.” Many Campus Aides report that their hours are being reduced to less than four hours, making them ineligible for health care benefits.

“LAUSD is the second largest school district in the country. It has over $6 billion in reserves. You can do better for our children and dedicated education workers,” Jazmin Araujo-Vargas, a Special Education Assistant, told the board.
