At our June 25 LMC meeting, the elected SEIU Local 99 LMC team delivered a clear message to MAOF: respect our work, fix what's broken, and stop the delays.
From unsafe heat to confusing PTO policies, we're holding the organization accountable—because we deserve better.
No More Office Time? No Chairs? We Say No Way.
A Supervisor at Beta Vista worksite claimed office time was canceled. Additionally, workers are also dealing with poor lighting and the lack of adult chairs.
Members demanded that MAOF reinstate office time and request proper lighting and adult-sized chairs.
Together we pushed MAOF to recognize that Office time was not officially canceled, and that they will be looking into the matter. Supervisor training will also be administered to address the issue. MAOF claims there is no proper lighting because classroom lamps are a hazard. Our demand is for safe, usable lighting.
No A/C = Unsafe Work Conditions
Members working at Home-based site have no working air conditioning. United we raised concerns surrounding the extreme heat and unsafe environment.
We urged MAOF to respond. MAOF claims the home-based site is not MAOF-owned, but they will be contacting the landlord for repairs.
PTO Confusion = Disrespect
Members have expressed that there are some supervisors telling workers not to book travel and falsely claiming a 30-day PTO approval rule. We agree that these scare tactics are unacceptable, and we clarified that informing of travel plans as soon as members are aware is acceptable. However, PTO should not be denied or threatened. MAOF informed us that the 30-day notice is not a requirement, and they will be following up with supervisors to inform them.
No Coverage for Custodians
Members brought up the issue front and center that there have been instances at White Memorial worksite that when the assigned custodians are absent or on leave, the expectation is that teachers are forced to cover their work.
Members clarified that covering custodial work is not our job and insist that custodial coverage be provided immediately. MAOF responded to assure us a lead custodian should be assigned to cover absences moving forward.
