SEIU Local 99 Members at MAOF Pickets to Demand Wages Above Poverty

On Tuesday, May 26, teachers, custodians, office staff, and early education workers at the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) came together in solidarity to demand respect and living wages.

Management responded by releasing workers early in an attempt to prevent them from joining the picket line and to undermine their collective action. But despite those efforts, SEIU Local 99 members still showed up in force and made one thing clear: we demand wages that lift us out of poverty.

SEIU Local 99 members at MAOF provide essential care and education for children and families in their community every day. They are fighting for a fair contract and wages that reflect the value of their work so they can continue supporting the children and families who depend on their services.

Management’s disregard for workers impacts not only staff, but also the children and families they serve. This fight is about the entire community—educators, staff, children, and parents alike. When we stand together, we are powerful. Through collective action, members can win a contract that lifts them out of poverty and provides them with a sustainable path forward. Members will continue organizing, speaking out, and demanding the fair contract they deserve.

The Bargaining Team is in negotiations today, continuing the fight, and we will keep on sharing updates on what is happening and what’s to come.
