Today, dozens of members of the California Legislature sent a powerful letter to Los Angeles Unified School District leadership, standing in solidarity with SEIU Local 99 members as contract negotiations continue.

In the letter, legislators uplift the essential role SEIU Local 99 members play in keeping schools running every day: from supporting students in classrooms to making sure they have healthy meals every day, to ensuring campuses are safe and functioning. They recognize that Local 99 members are often the first to step up during crises, showing up for students and families no matter what.

At the same time, the letter calls out the unacceptable reality too many members are facing:

• 99% cannot afford a one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles County
• 65% have experienced hunger due to low wages
• 35% have been at risk of homelessness
• 10% have experienced homelessness while working for LAUSD

Legislators make it clear: this is not sustainable, and it must change.

They are calling on LAUSD to address these long-standing inequities by ensuring SEIU Local 99 members receive fair wages, adequate hours, and the support needed to do the work and serve students.

The message from Sacramento is clear: SEIU Local 99 members are essential and deserve to be respected, protected, and paid accordingly.
