Meet the Candidates

Micah Ali

Born and raised in Compton, Micah is currently the President of the Compton Unified School Board. He was elected to the board in 2007 and overwhelming reelected in 2011 and 2015. He is a recognized leader in addressing the needs of students and families in our communities and understands that what happens outside the classroom affects student learning inside the classroom. That’s why he’s a strong advocate for good, union jobs, school-based health centers, expanding early care and education for low-income children, and clean and safe communities. Micah is the national Chairman of the Council of Urban Boards of Education, a Member of the Board of Directors of the National School Boards Association, and a Member of the Board of Directors of the California School Boards Association. He also serves on the state’s Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory (RIPA) Commission as an appointee of the California State Senate. “I was reared in Compton, am a product of our schools, and believe strongly that the most important thing I have to do is to make sure our children receive a quality education,” says Micah.

Charles Davis

Charles has lived in Compton for nearly 50 years. He was first elected to the Compton School Board in 2013 and overwhelmingly reelected in 2015. His commitment to advancing opportunities for students and residents of Compton runs deep. He was previously a member of the Compton Community College District’s Board of Trustees and served as Compton’s City Clerk for over 30 years. He also brings a keen understanding of business and budgeting, having owned several businesses in the city. He has also served as a board member for Compton’s Salvation Army and YMCA. “There’s so much to do done in our school district,” says Davis. “Education is the most important issue and it takes time to develop good programs for students. It’s my goal to continue to build on our accomplishments.”
