Although we are battling this employer over layoffs of Child Development Services (CDS) and other classified staff, we’ve also had some initial discussions about the role of the remaining classified staff in distance learning and the eventual reopening of schools.
In July, our union sent all employers a demand to bargain over their plans for returning to school and any changes they plan to make due to COVID-19. All of our negotiations with employers are being guided by our Principles for Reopening Schools. Here is an update on our discussions with employers

Unless Governor Gavin Newsom and the state legislature take immediate action to dedicate additional funds to school districts to implement social distancing protocols, proper PPE for all, training, testing and other safety measures, it will be almost impossible for classroom instruction to safely resume in the fall.

On July 16, the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School Board will be announcing their recommendation for the reopening of schools in the fall. They will be considering massive cuts to child development services and other critical student services. We must make our voices heard.
