An important part of our mission as a union is to raise the standard of living for all members and all working people. Part of this work means electing to office women and men who make policy and budgetary decisions that affect our jobs and communities. Today, we launch our 2020 Elections web page where members can learn about key elections our union is involved in, the candidates SEIU Local 99 members have endorsed, and how you can be part of the change.

New Protections for Beyond the Bell After School Workers

In 2018, the California School Employees Association (CSEA) sponsored Assembly Bill 2160, authored by the current Superintendent of Public Instruction - Tony Thurmond, to bring Playground Aides, and after-school workers into the classified service. Before we were “at-will” employees, meaning we could be fired whenever and for whatever reason. AB 2160 will strengthen the relationships we have with our schools, communities, and students. With permanent status, Playground Aides and Beyond the Bell workers gain strong protections and the same benefits/rights all classified employees enjoy. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.

Do you want to help resolve worksite issues? Have ideas on how we can improve student services? Join one of our Labor Management Committees (LMC). These committees are made-up of members who meet regularly with school district administrators to find solutions to worksite problems, improve working conditions, and improve the student services we provide. Nominations are now open and voting for contested seats will take place on February 8.
