SMMUSD Members: Join a Meeting Friday, March 15!

By |March 12th, 2024|Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District|

Frontline education workers at Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District work hard to provide clean, safe, & supportive schools for all. But the school district refuses to recognize our contributions to student learning with livable wages, more staffing, and more hours to ensure students have the full support they need to succeed. After two years of contract bargaining, the district is only offering a 4% wage increase. Not enough! Let’s show the district that we demand respect!

Turning Up the Volume at Santa Monica Malibu Unified!

By |March 8th, 2024|Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District|

SEIU Local 99 members at Santa Monica Malibu Unified turned out in force today marching and rallying in front of school district offices to demand livable wages, no layoffs, and more staffing for student services. The school board must have heard we were coming because, even before their meeting started, they removed their scheduled vote on laying off a Media Services Coordinator from their agenda. It’s clear they are listening  - and, today, we turned-up the volume. Parents and students also joined us in our demands to improve staffing for student services. We let the district know that their 4% wage increase offer is an insult. We let them know that part-time won’t work at SMMUSD. Students need full-time services. And we let them know that they must invest in more staffing for student services – not cut back jobs! Our unity and actions are making a difference. Let’s keep moving forward.

Santa Monica Malibu Unified Board Members Push Forward With Layoffs! Let’s hold them accountable!

By |March 6th, 2024|Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District|

Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board members continue to ignore the vital services SEIU Local 99 provides to students and families. The board recently voted to lay off Physical Activities Specialists and on March 7, they are slated to vote on laying off a Media Services Coordinator. The Board has said that they will not allow the public to comment on this latest cut.  They say, Cut Backs! We say, Fight Back!

Some Progress In Negotiations – But Not Enough!

By |March 1st, 2024|Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District|

Our SEIU Local 99 bargaining team at SMMUSD met with the district on February 29th, 2024. It’s clear our speak-out at the school board meetings and purple-up actions at school sites are having an impact because there was some progress made on expanding work calendars and increasing work hours for some classifications. But it’s not enough! The district also made no movement on their wage proposal. They are only guaranteeing a 4% wage increase for 2024. Not enough!

Let’s Unite, Organize, & Mobilize!

By |February 29th, 2024|Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District|

On Tuesday, February 27, SEIU Local 99 members packed the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board meeting along with parents & students of the surrounding community. Together, we demanded that the board protect student services and jobs in our community by voting  "NO" against laying off Physical Activities Specialists (PAS) & a Media Services Coordinator.  While our actions moved the board to protect some jobs, ultimately a majority of the Board refused to listen to the voices of students, parents, and education workers and voted to move forward with the layoffs of 11 PAS and delay the vote on the Media Services Coordinator position until their next meeting on March 7.
