Become a Shop Steward

Stewards are the foundation for a strong, effective and democratic union. Stewards are our co-workers who we’ve selected to be our work site representatives. They promote fairness, justice, and equality at the work site by:

  • Organizing a strong and united work site
  • Working with management and Local 99 organizers to come up with solutions to workplace issues
  • Assisting members at work with filing grievances
  • Interpreting and enforcing our contract
  • Signing-up and orienting new members
  • Keeping members informed of union activities
  • Educating members about the importance of political action and our COPE Fund
  • Maintaining overall union solidarity and enthusiasm

How to Become or Continue Being a Steward

Step 1 (New Stewards): Get Nominated

Members in good standing (defined as being current in membership dues) can become a shop steward through a nominating procedure. All new and continuing stewards (electing for a new term) must submit a completed nomination form.

Step 2: Get Training

New Stewards
If training sessions are scheduled to occur within the first six months of being elected as a steward, you are required to attend at least two sessions.

Continuing Stewards
If training sessions are scheduled to occur within the first six months of being re-elected, you must attend one session.
